complete workspace

Pros

It feels like a complete workspace because it connects well with other office tools and team spaces. One of the biggest advantages is not having to keep checking email all the time. When your workplace is active on Slack, updates come in instantly through simple notifications and the notification settings are detailed enough that you can appear offline or away once work hours are over. Another thing that works really well is the balance in communication, it doesn't feel too personal but it's not overly formal either. You can message or reach out to anyone in the company without worrying about interrupting them or sounding too casual. Meeting and event reminders also save the trouble of manually adding everything to a calendar. Overall, it feels like the kind of central interface every organization should have.

Cons

An area that definitely needs improvement is the audio and video quality during calls because that part still needs work. Aside from that, having a large number of channels can get a bit confusing to manage. Since channels act like smaller groups inside one shared platform, too many of them can sometimes lead to confusion or even miscommunication. Another drawback is that it tends to perform properly only on the app. On Chrome or other browsers, it can be noticeably rough and less reliable.

useful add-ons and widgets

Pros

Very user-friendly and looks professional, while still offering plenty of features, including useful add-ons and widgets like Google Calendar integration.

Cons

There are lots of useful add-ons available and I just wish the platform did a better job of prompting users about the more popular ones they might want to enable.

mention function is great

Pros

It has been an amazing tool for getting more done at work. It helps keep communication organized by letting you create separate channels for different topics or projects. It also works really well with other tools like Google Drive. Setup is simple and there are plenty of features that make it very useful for team communication. Some of the standout features are topic-based channels, the @mention function that makes it simple to direct messages to specific people and the wide range of app integrations that make sharing information across the team much more convenient.

Cons

Keeping up with conversations can be challenging at times. With so much back-and-forth between people, it's not always easy to follow who is responding to whom. That can get frustrating especially when you're trying to stay focused on a specific discussion and end up losing track. Another downside is that it can also become pretty distracting.

huge improvement for our team

Pros

Having everything in one place has been a huge improvement for our team. It pulled us away from relying on Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp group chats for business conversations which made communication feel much more organized and professional.

Cons

non-paid plans only keep message history for 90 days. It works well for current, day-to-day communication but it's not the best option if you need to keep long-term records.

channels have been a big help

Pros

Channels have been a big help for our team because they keep conversations organized and make it easier to keep projects moving ahead. The third-party integrations have also been really useful especially connecting tools like Google Drive which has added a lot of convenience to our workflow.

Cons

One frustrating change was the update to the free plan which now only keeps 90 days of chat and channel history. That was disappointing especially since the previous free version used to be limited by total message count instead.

helped us work during cOVID

Pros

It has been a huge part of how our team stays connected and productive. Over the years, it has consistently been one of the best tools for communication, collaboration and audio/video meetings. During the pandemic especially, it really helped us continue working remotely without disruption. It also comes packed with useful features like file sharing, third-party integrations, reminders, bots and multiple channels which make daily work much more efficient. Communication across the team feels smooth, it works well across different platforms and the interface is very user-friendly.

Cons

After using it for 7 years, I honestly haven't run into any issues. From my perspective, everything has worked really well.

has a number of pros

Pros

Being able to set reminders on messages, getting real-time notifications with email integration and using it right in the browser instead of having to install an app are the things that make it stand out. It also works well for setting up meetings with teammates, creating threads within the main chat and viewing code snippets without any hassle.

Cons

It's a really solid tool for sharing files and code snippets but one issue I noticed is that my teammates tend to prefer WhatsApp for instant messaging instead. A lot of the time, if someone hasn't turned on notifications, they won't see the message right away which makes instant communication less reliable.

flaky alerts

Pros

Using it as a direct messaging tool at work has been pretty satisfying overall. My company has its own channel and profile setup and sending messages is fairly simple. The @ tagging feature, similar to Twitter or Facebook, makes it really convenient to reply to someone, mention them or send a DM and that has been super helpful. I also appreciate having a business-focused DM option instead of relying on Messenger. On desktop, it works decently enough even if it is not amazing. That said, once there are 20 or more people, it seems to slow the server down a lot. My Moto Stylus is a decent phone with enough memory but I still end up needing to restart it or clear the cache every few days.

Cons

It gets the job done but I still cannot figure out why notifications do not work properly. That part is really frustrating especially when it causes me to miss something important or lose track of a message from higher-ups.

Nice app

Pros

It keeps communication flowing well across different departments in an organization making it much easier for teams to stay connected and aligned.

Cons

There is not really anything major to complain about, the only small thing is that the notification sound alerts could be a little different.

helpful for globally distributed teams

Pros

Keeping in touch with everyone across my globally distributed team of 58 people is really simple with Slack. It makes communication simple and convenient for all of us.

Cons

cost for larger teams like mine is too much. At around $5-10 per user each month, upgrading gets expensive fast so we end up staying on the free plan. Because of that, our message history disappears after a month or two.

Quite a few handy features

Pros

Easy to set up, it runs reliably and it connects with plenty of APIs and third-party tools. Huddles for quick audio calls are also a really useful addition, along with a lot of other handy features.

Cons

Honestly, there is not much I dislike about it. The only minor thing that comes to mind is that some people end up using Slack messages in place of emails. That said, the two serve very different purposes, emails stay as a more permanent record, while chat messages are more temporary so that feels more like a user habit than an issue with the platform itself.

Solid choice for coordination

Pros

It works well for sharing real-time updates, announcements and handling a smaller set of tasks. It's a solid option when the goal is keeping everyone informed and coordinating lightweight work.

Cons

Once the team gets large and multiple departments are involved, it doesn't seem to scale that well for project and task management. It can start to feel messy and overwhelming and when I was working with a group of around 200 people, I had to rely on search constantly just to track down specific threads and files.

Organizes internal communication

Pros

Using this software feels very simple and it does an excellent job of keeping internal communication organized and efficient.

Cons

You can use it to communicate with clients outside your company but most businesses still tend to rely on other platforms such as Microsoft Teams or Google Meet.

Managing channels is not hard

Pros

Keeping in touch with people is simple and connecting third-party APIs works really well. It also does a solid job with organizational hierarchy, plus creating and managing channels is simple and very useful for team communication.

Cons

The notification management could be better and there are still some biometric issues on Android.

fun to use

Pros

It was easy to set up. With private messaging, comment posting and topic-based channels, it feels like one of the best communication tools for growing businesses. It's also fun to use and there are plenty of ways to recognize people and keep conversations lively with GIFs and emojis.

Cons

I can't create my own channel since only admins in my organization are allowed to set up a new community or private network. The only thing I can create myself is a group for sending DMs so I have to contact administration whenever I need a new channel.

Keeps everyone aligned on monthly tasks

Pros

Using it alongside Manifestly has been really helpful for our team. It keeps everyone aligned on important daily, weekly and monthly tasks and helps staff stay on top of what needs to get done.

Cons

At the moment, we're on the free plan so we can't access older messages. It's not a big problem for us right now though since we always have the option to upgrade if we decide we need that message history.

Impressed with Slack

Pros

It has been one of the most impressive internet messaging apps I've used in a long time. It really stands in its own space. Sharing online content especially files like PDFs, works extremely well and the app includes useful features that are there whenever they're needed.

Cons

There isn't much to complain about, honestly. The only downside seems to be that messages do not stay available for very long. Hopefully, over time, they improve chat retention so conversations can remain accessible for longer.

Makes communication transparent

Pros

Having everyone in one place really improves team coordination, makes communication more transparent and helps each person stay accountable for their work.

Cons

After using it for the past 9 months, I honestly haven't run into any problems or dislikes. The only thing I'd suggest is adding text message notifications when someone replies to a message.
