VistA EHR Software

The Veterans Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA) EHR, more formally known as the VistA Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), is an open source nationwide veterans clinical and business information system of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. VistA handles more than 8 million veterans records and supports the clinical, administrative, and financial operations of over 1800 hospitals and clinics of the VHA. Facilities range from small clinics that provide solely outpatient care to large medical centers with significant inpatient populations and their associated specialties, such as surgical care, pain management or dermatology.

The platform focuses on clinically relevant record data that improves patient care by improving clinical and administrative decision-making. The records system supports HL7 standards for HIE (health information exchange) and is used in ambulatory, hospitals, and long-term care facilities. It includes modules for CPOE, laboratory tests, E-prescriptions, patient care diet orders, MRIs and other clinical documentation. As VA health care is free for veterans who qualify for medical services, there is no billing module in VistA EHR.

It is currently available for download on the VA’s website. There are also a number of communities further developing VistA separately from the VA, the most famous one being OSHERA.

All good things

Pros:

Pros:

GOOD OPTION

Pros:
It has a clean dashboard and creates customized workflows to help us manage everything we need with no external help.
Cons:
The patient charts do not auto-save and we need to click every time which our doctors sometimes forget about.

Easy and customizable

Pros:
The software dashboard is great and gives us all the information we need at a glance. We can customize the templates and cut down processing time

A good choice

Pros:

It is too early to tell

Pros:
We have only started using this program and although the training went very well and they continue to follow up to ask about our progress, I cannot make a definitive statement on the usability.
Cons:
One thing I have noticed is that there are not that many customization options for the templates.

Very practical and easy-to-use

Pros:
I have found this software to be very user-friendly. It has a simple interface that all my employees can use with ease. We are also happy with the customer service because they are quick to respond to our complaints and patiently walk us through the solution no matter how many times we call them.
