Nosh EMR Software

What is Nosh EMR?

Overview

Nosh EMR, also known as New Open Source Health ChartingSystem, is an open-source charting system and electronic medical record (EMR) software developed by Michael Chen, MD, a family physician based in Portland, Oregon.

This cloud-based platform is designed with the aim to mitigate widespread problems in the EHR industry, such as high costs, downtimes, and privacy issues. It can be deployed on a small, secure web server that is on 24/7, such as a cloud virtual machine or a router. Using the latest encryption technologies, users will be able to access the data on this server on a web browser, smart phone, or tablet.

Due to the self-sovereign technology, users will also be able to go back and verify that an activity took place (such as signing a prescription) and was notated legally by the patient-allowed physician or user.

What is Nosh EMR Best For?

Nosh EMR is best known for its ability to provide medical providers with access to a secure, independent, electronic health record platform for minimal costs. Built upon new-age encryption and self-sovereign technology, physicians will have complete control over the design of the EHR, and patients will be able to decide who gets to see and use their medical information.

One area where Nosh EMR does especially well is the charting system. While charting is an essential tool for doctors, many EMR software providers fail to meet this demand, as they focus on viewing the data as records, rather than presenting it in a user-friendly way. Nosh EMR addresses this issue and offers customizable features around charting with multi-model options as:

  • Active issues list
  • Medication list
  • Supplements list
  • Allergy list
  • Past interactions
  • Organized document handling system
  • Automated task reminder and alert system

Nosh EMR Cost

Nosh EMR offers users a cost-effective pricing plan that starts at just $50 a month per user. A free trial is also available.

How does Nosh EMR Work?

You can get started with Nosh EMR by logging in with one of the four login types available on the software. Different logins enable Nosh to be used by people relevant to specific practices, including providers, assistants, billers, and patients. Each contains modules and functionalities for workflows without compromising the security of records or data.

Once logged in, you will be given direct access to a wide range of functionalities available on Nosh EMR according to your background (i.e., medical practitioner or patient) on the user interface.

Nosh EMR’s server can be used on a standalone computer or installed in the cloud. Nosh ChartingSystem is compatible with any computer system (Windows, Mac, or Linux) as long as there is a network connection and web browser (Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, or Safari).

Who is Nosh EMR For?

As an open-source software, Nosh EMR is primarily designed for professionals within the medical field, particularly physicians, providers, assistants, and doctors at small and midsize businesses. The platform is also designed for patients through its patient portal, medical records, EHR, and provider ordering features.

Nosh EMR Software Features

  1. Patient Portal

Nosh EMR is divided into portals, including a patient portal, an assistant portal, and a billing user portal (for accountants). The patient portal on Nosh EMR allows  patients to secure messaging and schedule appointments with their healthcare providers or doctors, as well as review lab results, and documents. Users can also fill out personalized forms directly integrated into the patient encounter in a single click.

  1. Customizable Medical Charts

Customizable charts and graphs on Nosh EMR include in-depth information regarding patient demographics, active issues, medications, supplements, allergy lists, and past encounters. Healthcare practitioners have access to an organized document-handling system, where they can create personalized templates for patient HPI (history of illness), ROS (review of systems), and PE (physical examination).

  1. Medical Records

Customizable reports allow for more accurate and relevant reports leading to patient encounters. With medical records, physicians can tailor the history of illness, physical examination, and review of systems templates to fulfill their needs. In addition, personalized electronic forms can be delivered and completed via the patient portal and stored in the patient’s records.

  1. Practice Management

On Nosh EMR, claims can be compiled and exported in either PDF or text files for ease of storage or uploading to a claims clearinghouse such as Office Ally. Practice management tools allow physicians to track remaining balances to a claim and track revenues month-to-month or year-to-year.

  1. Provider Ordering Features

The provider ordering feature on Nosh EMR is a computerized provider order entry (CPOE), which includes an e-prescribing function for patients via Dr. First that is separate from the Nosh ChartingSystem. Ordering features also allow for checks for medication interactions whenever a new prescription is made.

How is Nosh EMR different from other software?

Although not a certified EHR, Nosh offers several advantages over other types of EHR software:

  • Gives full control over the design of the EHR: Nosh is a small independent provider which means individual physicians will get full control over the design of their EHR for good without influence from administrators, insurance companies, or even government entities.
  • Massive security: Nosh makes it harder for hackers with malicious intent to crack their servers one by one just to get a single patient record.
  • Protects the privacy of patients: Because Nosh is built upon an encryption technology, patients will have control over their health information and who gets to see or use it and who doesn’t. A patient will be able to communicate with a doctor through SMS or calls without compromising privacy and security.
  • Affordable: Nosh only costs an upward of $50 per user per month, while most of the EHR software in the industry costs at least $250.

Is Nosh EMR Right for You?

Nosh EMR seeks to provide medical professionals an equal chance of getting an easy-to-use, robust, world-class electronic health record system, with features like remote scanning and an electronic lab interface to be rolled out in the near future.

Many users have recommended this EHR software for its user-friendly, easy-to-use interface, as well as its customizable features for healthcare providers like medical charts and records. Many have found the platform to be very low-cost, successfully meeting the needs of organizations.

However, some have noted that Nosh EMR’s customization requires prior programming knowledge to make the most of its features, as well as extensive medical knowledge and analysis. To solve this, a GitHub community provides some support, both for user questions and expanding functionality by coding.

CONS

  • Cost: Implementing an EMR system can be expensive, as it requires an upfront investment in the software and any necessary hardware, as well as training for staff to use the system effectively.
  • Complexity: EMR systems can be complex, with many different features and functions. This can require a significant investment of time and resources to set up and maintain the system.
  • Change management: Transitioning to a new EMR system can be challenging for healthcare providers, as it may require significant changes to existing workflows and processes.
  • Data migration and user adoption: Migrating existing patient records and data to a new EMR system can be a time-consuming and complex process. Some staff members may also resist using the new system, which can impact the overall effectiveness of the EMR.
  • Technical issues and data privacy: Like any software, EMR systems may experience technical issues or glitches, which can disrupt workflow and impact patient care. There are also data privacy concerns, since the handling and storage of sensitive patient information raises concerns about data privacy and security.

The best EMR for your practice!

March 2023

Amy T.

Hospital and Behavioral Health

Pros:
Nosh EMR is a healthcare management software that offers us a comprehensive solution to streamline their workflow. By automating many administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments, managing patient data, and documenting visits, Nosh EMR can significantly reduce the time spent on paperwork and free up resources for more important tasks.
Cons:
Despite the benefits of EMR systems, technical issues or glitches may occur, causing delays or disruptions in the workflow. To avoid such issues, we have to ensure that we have adequate technical support and maintenance. This will help to minimize downtime and ensure that the system is always up and running smoothly.

Nosh will help optimize workflow.

Jacob S.

Hospital and Behavioral Health

Pros:
Nosh EMR can minimize the risk of errors that may occur due to manual data entry and other human errors. It lets us make better-informed decisions and provide more efficient care with accurate and up-to-date patient information.
Cons:
I have one critical concern, that is the security and privacy of sensitive patient information. EMR systems store vast amounts of patient data, including personal information, medical history, and treatment plans. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that the system complies with data privacy laws and regulations and that the data is secure from unauthorized access or breaches.

An all-in-one solution but pricey!

NOSH EMR, a leading healthcare technology solution, has provided healthcare providers with a streamlined workflow by automating many administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and documenting patient visits. This not only saves time but also reduces the risk of errors that can occur when such tasks are performed manually.
Cons:
However, implementing NOSH EMR can be costly, as it requires an upfront investment in the software and any necessary hardware, as well as training for staff to use the system effectively. Moreover, the customer support is also very bad. I have to message again and again to get one thing done.
