Overview

Kissmetrics software helps teams connect individual customer behavior to revenue and identify which acquisition channels bring valuable customers. Although some reviewers find dashboard-wide filtering restrictive, the platform provides person-level attribution across the customer journey — which helps teams understand which channels are actually driving revenue.

What Is Kissmetrics?

Kissmetrics is a digital analytics platform built for teams that want to understand customer behavior and its connection to revenue. It brings website, server-side, and imported event data into unified customer records — with tools that support funnels, cohorts, activity tracking, path analysis, A/B test reporting, and individual user search. Teams can use these reports to identify conversion drop-offs and retention patterns (including behaviors associated with stronger engagement and revenue outcomes). This allows the same underlying event data to support analysis across reports, populations, campaigns, API queries, and CLI workflows.

What Is Kissmetrics Best For?

Kissmetrics' notable feature is its Funnel Report. It keeps cross-device activity connected to the same customer journey and segments funnels by properties (including device, plan, and acquisition source). As a result, it becomes easier to see where particular user groups drop out. That's what makes it a fit for teams that need to pinpoint friction across multi-step conversion journeys. Without person-level funnel tracking, drop-offs may be viewed as disconnected sessions, but with this tool, teams can trace where individual customers lose momentum across the funnel.

How Much Does Kissmetrics Cost?

Kissmetrics pricing starts at $99/month for the Growth plan. The vendor also offers a free plan for users to track, ask, and report on their own data. Other subscription plans with custom pricing include:

  • Gold
  • Silver

Additional costs might include:

  • Event Volume Overages: $0.10–$0.20/1,000 events above the plan allotment, depending on total event usage
  • Implementation And Migration Services: $2,000–$15,000+ for done-for-you analytics implementation, typically structured as a small upfront deposit plus a success fee tied to an agreed outcome metric
  • Custom Event Schema Design And Cleanup: $1,000–$4,000 one-time for designing, restructuring, or cleaning up the event schema
  • Ongoing Tracking And Event Taxonomy Maintenance: $500–$1,500/month for approximately 2–10 hours of development work to maintain tracking accuracy and event structures

Kissmetrics is often described by reviewers as a competitively priced option. Its pricing can be more suitable for B2B companies than some comparable analytics platforms. However, because costs increase with event volume and selected requirements, the final price can rise as usage grows.

How Does Kissmetrics Work?

Here’s how users typically manage their analytics workflow using Kissmetrics features:

  • Log in or sign up for Kissmetrics and create a workspace for the website or product you want to track
  • Add the tracking snippet to your website, or send data through server-side APIs and imports
  • Define the events and properties you want to monitor so incoming behavioral data is organized around relevant user actions
  • Verify that events are being captured correctly and adjust tracking rules or event definitions where needed
  • Track clicks, page activity, backend events, and imported records as Kissmetrics associates activity with individual users across devices
  • Build metrics, funnels, cohorts, or other analyses around conversion steps, retention patterns, product activity, and user behavior
  • Analyze customer journeys through reports to identify drop-offs, compare segments, examine retention, or review the actions that lead to conversion
  • Save useful analyses as dashboard widgets or scheduled reports for ongoing monitoring as new data comes in
  • Export report results or user segments through CSV, S3, API, or connected business tools when the data needs to be used elsewhere

Who Is Kissmetrics For?

Kissmetrics supports businesses across different industries and sectors, including:

  • E-commerce
  • SaaS
  • EdTech
  • Marketplaces
  • Sales-led businesses
  • Fintech

Kissmetrics Use Cases

Based on our assessment of the platform’s capabilities, we found several use cases where Kissmetrics may be especially effective, including:

E-Commerce Conversion Analysis For Marketing Analysts

When an e-commerce marketing analyst needs to identify where shoppers leave before completing a purchase, Kissmetrics can track each person’s progression across product views, cart additions, checkout, and completed orders. The analyst can then examine the specific checkout stage where prospective buyers drop out and compare that pattern across customer segments.

SaaS Retention Tracking For Product Managers

For a SaaS product manager responsible for post-signup engagement, Kissmetrics can group customers into cohorts based on when they first complete an action. Its cohort analysis can then compare how those groups behave over time after activation. Users note that funnel and cohort analyses help them understand customer journeys and make more informed marketing decisions.

Acquisition Revenue Analysis For Growth Marketers

A growth marketer can use this software to compare acquisition channels based on revenue. The platform connects revenue events with the channel that originally acquired each person, which, as reflected in the reporting setup, can support acquisition-spend decisions beyond traffic and signup volume alone.

Customer Journey Analysis For Membership Marketers

Marketing managers testing different routes from initial visit to paid membership may need to identify which path moves prospective members toward conversion more effectively. Kissmetrics compares progression across campaigns or page variations, helping managers determine which route performs better based on funnel behavior and user feedback.

Is Kissmetrics Right For You?

Kissmetrics can be a suitable option for businesses that expect their analytics requirements to grow with customer activity. The platform supports companies from small businesses to established organizations, and its pricing scales primarily with monthly event volume.

From a security perspective, the vendor uses SSL encryption for its APIs and server communications, separates customer data stores, applies product-specific access credentials, and restricts server access to selected employees. The platform also replicates data across multiple AWS Availability Zones and maintains documented GDPR compliance. Clients include Microsoft, Airbnb, Unbounce, Pipedrive, AWeber, Segment, Carvana, Appcues, and DocSend.

Kissmetrics Features

Event Schema

This feature displays the events being sent to Kissmetrics and ranks them by actual event volume. Users can review each event’s active, idle, or stale status, open an event, and inspect the properties and values associated with it.

See How It Works
Event Roles

The tool assigns functional meanings such as product view, checkout, signup, activation, or conversion to tracked events. These roles create a shared vocabulary across reports and AI queries, while changes to an assigned role automatically update the downstream modules that reference it.

See How It Works
UTM Builder

It creates campaign links according to a naming convention defined by the organization. Kissmetrics supports individual and bulk link generation, while channel previews show how each link will be classified. The tool can also backtest existing URLs and reattribute traffic that was tagged incorrectly.

See How It Works
Live View

Kissmetrics uses Live View to display tracked events as they arrive on the platform. It presents incoming activity as a real-time stream or on a map, while giving users a direct view of behavioral data before it feeds into subsequent reports and analyses.

Misleading pricing and surprise charges

Pros

Nothing stood out in a positive way. Other tools offer better comparable, if not identical, features.

Cons

The pricing shown on their website feels deceptive. I signed up for the Pay As You Go plan because my site gets very little traffic, under 200 visits a month so I expected to be charged only for that limited usage. At first, everything seemed fine. Then I stopped using the platform because the service just wasn't that good compared with other options. I assumed I could come back later and still use the Pay As You Go plan without worrying about unexpected costs. Instead, a few months later, I was hit with three separate charges on the same day, each for $25.99. When I reached out to support, they claimed the charges were applied because my free trial had ended and that these were retroactive billing attempts. That explanation didn't make sense to me at all. They also said previous charges had failed because my credit card blocked them which I don't buy since failed payment attempts normally trigger email notifications and my card company also alerts me whenever a transaction is declined or blocked.

Detailed customer tracking

Pros

It has been a really useful tool for tracking customers in more detail and it's helped me get a much clearer picture of who my best customers are, what actions they take and what they're most interested in. The setup process was simple and it's turned out to be a very effective marketing tool overall.

Cons

For smaller companies, the cost can be a concern since it isn't a free tool. That said, there is a free trial available which helps before committing to a more expensive decision.

Worth the effort

Pros

It feels like a really strong alternative to Google Analytics 360. The interface is well designed and I especially appreciate how it tracks actions like liking products making purchases and abandoning carts. Getting everything installed does take a bit of time but I think the payoff is absolutely worth it.

Cons

Setting up the installation can be challenging and getting team sharing configured is also a little tricky.
