Orchard Software, now acquired by Clinisys, is a laboratory information system (LIS) used by clinical and hospital laboratories. Lab technicians, pathologists, and lab managers use it across diagnostics and the healthcare sector. Users report reliable workflow management and reporting efficiency, while some note that the result approval process may require improvements. More recently, Clinisys launched CLS v2025.2, introducing CLS CARE – an embedded AI-powered chat agent that offers instant, multilingual guidance on functionality, configuration, and usage.

Our Verdict

Orchard Software is ideally suited for physician groups, hospitals, reference labs, and public health organizations seeking structured, high-volume lab workflows within a proven LIS system. It is a strong fit for teams that value compliance-focused operations alongside long-term stability. Pricing feels better aligned with established organizations rather than smaller practices. Overall, it is recommended for labs of varying sizes now operating under the broader Clinisys ecosystem.

What Is Orchard Software?

Orchard Software is a cloud-based platform that provides comprehensive laboratory information system tools to manage laboratory workflows, sample tracking, and reporting across multiple testing departments. It enables advanced data mining, configurable analytics, and robust decision support to enhance efficiency and patient care. The system supports high-volume clinical, microbiology, molecular, toxicology, and pathology testing with automated workflows and specimen management. It also includes web access, remote workstation support, and extensive modules for specialized testing environments.

What is Orchard Software Best For?

The platform is worth noting for its ‘Clinisys Orchard Point-Of-Care Module’ for centralized control of point-of-care testing across multiple patient sites. It supports specimen tracking, including collection, routing, and device management, with integration across locations. A competency module tracks training and evaluations to support inspection requirements and certified staff. It offers configurable data management with SaaS deployment options for varied POCT setups. Coordinators can meet regulatory needs while maintaining patient safety and reimbursement accuracy. Dashboards, QC tracking, and other decision-support tools provide oversight of testing activities.

How Much Does Orchard Software Cost?

The software pricing usually starts at $500–$2,000/month for small clinics. Mid-sized laboratories may roughly incur $25,000–$100,000+ total first-year cost. For large hospitals or multi-site labs, it is often $150,000 to several hundred thousand dollars depending on integrations and modules. These are estimated figures, and final costs may vary depending on size of the organizations, features selected, number of users, and more.

$150,000 to several hundred thousand dollars depending on integrations and modules. These are estimated figures, and final costs may vary depending on size of the organizations, features selected, number of users, and more.

Additionally, organizations may incur the following costs:

  • Implementation and setup: One-time onboarding cost, approximately $10,000–$50,000+
  • EHR/LIS interface integration: Per-interface fee, around $2,000–$15,000 each
  • Data migration: Historical data transfer cost, roughly $3,000–$20,000
  • Staff training: Initial user training sessions, about $1,000–$10,000
  • Annual support and maintenance: Recurring support contract, usually 15%–25% of software cost/year
  • Cloud hosting: Monthly or annual hosting fee, estimated $500–$5,000+/month
  • Custom reporting/workflows: Configuration or customization services, around $2,000–$25,000+
  • Hardware and lab devices: Servers, barcode printers, scanners, or analyzer connectivity hardware, approximately $5,000–$50,000+

Orchard Software Use Cases

Based on our analysis of user reviews and Orchard Software current capabilities, we have identified key scenarios where this software is a good fit for laboratory and healthcare organizations:

Large Hospital Laboratories Managing High Sample Volumes

Large hospital labs often deal with a constant flow of specimens. Work does not slow down, even during peak hours or emergencies. Orchard fits these environments where lab teams need steady control over high testing demand. It is commonly used in hospitals where laboratory work is closely tied to inpatient care and emergency services. The system supports structured lab routines that help staff keep pace without losing clarity in daily operations.

Multi-Location Healthcare Networks Aligning Lab Workflows

Healthcare systems with several locations often struggle to keep lab processes consistent. Small differences between sites can create reporting gaps or delays. Orchard is used in networks that want a shared way of handling lab work across all facilities. It helps teams stay on the same page even when they are not in the same building. Many users describe it as useful for keeping laboratory practices aligned across dispersed operations.

Reference Laboratories Managing Specialized Testing

Reference labs often handle a wide mix of test types and external samples. The work tends to move through several stages before results are finalized. Orchard fits this kind of setup where tracking each step clearly matters. It is often used in labs that process complex or specialized diagnostics for outside providers. The system helps teams stay organized when samples follow different paths through the lab.

Health Systems Connecting Lab Results To Clinical Care

Some health systems place strong focus on how lab data flows into patient care decisions. Results need to reach clinicians without delay and in a usable format. Orchard is suited for environments where lab information is shared across departments on a regular basis. It supports settings where doctors and care teams depend on timely diagnostic input. This makes it a practical option for organizations that rely on close coordination between labs and clinical staff.

Laboratories Operating Under Strict Compliance Requirements

Many laboratories work within strict regulatory frameworks that require careful documentation. Records must remain clear and accessible for review at any time. Orchard is often chosen by organizations that operate under these conditions. It is used in labs where structured processes and traceability are part of everyday work. Teams value it in environments where compliance and consistency are central to operations.

flexible and customizable

Pros

I have been a huge Orchard fan since 1997. the flexibility it gives us is amazing. I can customize pretty much everything. As a lab consultant, I've implemented a lot of Orchard LIS's because it's so easy and quick for staff to learn.

Cons

Since the new ownership took over, I've seen a big jump in pricing (interfaces, licenses, service). The invoices are super generic with no details even after repeatedly asking for itemization. The customer service feels old-school, leaving voicemails with no follow-up instead of emailing back. Data mining is not as strong as it used to be.
