Key Takeaways

Generated from the text of customer reviews

Tapcheck is an earned wages access platform that syncs with the company's existing payroll system to allow workers to get paid for wages before payday. While transfer costs might add up with regular use, many users praise the app's efficiency and reliability. Recently, Tapcheck announced a strategic partnership with Mize CPAs to expand its earned wage access and financial wellness offering.

Our Verdict

Tapcheck is a good fit for employers with hourly or shift-based workers who want early access to earned wages without employer fees. While employees may pay a small fee, employer-side pricing makes it a cost-effective benefit that integrates with most payroll systems. We recommend Tapcheck for high turnover industries that want to add this benefit without changing their existing payroll process.

What Is Tapcheck?

Tapcheck is a digital financial wellness platform that offers an Earned Wage Access (EWA), allowing employees to withdraw a portion of their accrued net pay before their scheduled payday. It syncs with employers’ payroll and timekeeping systems to calculate exact, after-tax earnings. Employees can transfer their earned wages instantly for a small flat fee, saving them from the high interest rates of traditional payday loans. The service is free for employers to offer; employees pay a flat, ATM-style fee only when they transfer funds.

What Is Tapcheck Best For?

Tapcheck’s one of the standout features is the Net wage calculation based on real-time, data-driven information. Whereas apps based on simple algorithms try to estimate your weekly salary, Tapcheck can be embedded into over 300 time-clock and payroll systems, including ADP, Paychex and Workday to calculate after-tax net pay the instant you clock out of a shift. This suits hourly and shift workers because they can withdraw money before they need it without a risk of over drafting, and also the hourly wage worker does not have to be credit checked or have an interest rate applied.

How Much Does Tapcheck Cost?

Tapcheck pricing starts at $2.95/advance as a small, flat transaction fee. As it is an Earned Wage Access (EWA) program and not a loan provider, there are no interest charges, subscription Tapcheck pricing, or hidden membership fees.

For employers, there is no setup fee, subscription cost, per-employee fee, and integration cost. Whereas signing up, checking available balances, and using the built-in financial education tools are entirely free for employees. They only pay a fee when they actively choose to transfer money:

  • Immediate Access/Instant Transfer: $4.95/advance
  • Tapcheck Mastercard Transfer: $2.95 for card-to-card transfers

The transfer fee is completely waived if employees choose to cash out their earned wages onto discounted store gift cards via the Tapcheck App.

The overall fee format, according to some reviewers, is reasonable given the instant access it provides. Several users also note that the flat transfer fee feels fair compared to other overdraft or payday-loan alternatives. A few users, however, report that the fee adds up with frequent use, though most say the convenience it offers outweighs the cost during financial emergencies.

Who Is Tapcheck For?

The software serves employers and employees across a range of industries and sectors, including:

  • Retail
  • Hospitality
  • Healthcare
  • Manufacturing
  • Staffing agencies
  • Hourly or shift-based workforce

Tapcheck Use Cases

Based on our analysis of Tapcheck features and earned wage access service model, we have identified key scenarios where this platform is a strong fit for employers with hourly or shift-based workforces:

Competitor-Targeted Job Recruitment

The competition between retail, quick-service food chains, and health care providers for hourly labor forces is quite intense, especially when they all recruit at the same hourly rate. With Tapcheck, hiring managers can create ads for job vacancies on job boards like Indeed and include wording like "Same Day Payment Available with Tapcheck!" at the top of the ad. Because jobseekers search for same-day payment jobs in particular, this leads to significant increases in applicants for that role compared to competitors that stick to the per-pay-period payment model.

Immediate Point-Of-Sale Emergency Purchases

When a personal emergency hit (like a flat tire on the way to work, an unexpected medical co-pay at urgent care, or running out of household groceries), employees often request HR for a manual salary advance. This puts managers into awkward situations and creates messy spreadsheet tracking for payroll teams. Companies redirect all emergency cash requests to the Tapcheck App. The employee requests the money independently, Tapcheck funds the advance instantly, and the system automatically deducts the balance on payday without HR getting involved.

Getting Staff To Work Extra Shifts

Restaurants and warehouse managers often need hourly workers on short notice (mostly because of an unexpected weekend rush). Through this software, managers can motivate their staff to cover that unplanned shift by promising immediate liquidity as an incentive, telling staff: 'Anyone who covers tonight's open shift can withdraw their earnings through Tapcheck the second they clock out.'

Employee Onboarding Without Bank Accounts

Employees without a bank account mostly receive paper checks. This necessitates that the HR department takes the time to print checks and track them while it forces the employees to use companies that charge high fees for cashing checks. When an employee is hired, HR sends them a digital Tapcheck Mastercard, which makes the HR department free from dealing with checks while it also removes the need for the employee to visit a check-cashing outlet.

Is Tapcheck Right For You?

If you operate in a high-turnover industry like retail, healthcare, or hospitality and need a free, competitive benefit to attract workers, then Tapcheck software is the right fit for you. It can protect your company's employees from high-interest credit cards, overdraft fees, or predatory payday loans.

But if your employees work entirely on fixed monthly salaries, and they want to borrow money against future hours they haven't worked yet, then this software is not the right choice for you.

Tapcheck connects directly to your payroll systems like ADP or Paychex via an API. The SOC 2 Type II certification ensures that Tapcheck’s connection won't act as a 'backdoor' for hackers to break into your company's main financial systems. If you connect an uncertified app to your payroll and it gets hacked, your company faces massive legal liabilities, CCPA/GDPR fines, and a PR disaster. This certification proves you did your due diligence by hiring a secure partner.

Automatically Calculated Net Pay

That prevents employees from over-advancing beyond what they have safely earned, protecting the employer’s payroll team from corrections and overdraft errors.

Tapcheck gives employees the opportunity to access their earned wages at any time, getting up to 70% of it paid prior to the payday date. It makes it immediately possible for employees to deal with unexpected bills without taking a payday loan with high-interest rates or using credit cards.

Pros

Nothing I’m annoyed my job switched over to Tapcheck it’s horrible never update hours, only help is “escalating a ticket” I’m sure i have 20 escalated tickets by now

Cons

I am extremely disappointed with Tapcheck’s customer service and lack of resolution. My hours have repeatedly not been updated correctly, which directly affects my access to my earned wages. I have submitted over 20 support tickets and each time I’m told my issue will be “expedited,” yet nothing is actually resolved. Calling the support number has not helped, and there is no clear escalation process or accountability. It feels like I am being given the same response over and over without any real action being taken. For a service that deals with people’s earned income, accuracy and timely support should be a priority. Based on my experience, Tapcheck has failed in both areas. I hope they improve their communication and actually follow through on resolving customer issues.

An excellent employee benefit

Pros

Tapcheck offers great value for our employees, giving them easy access to daily pay, emergency funds or even extra cash. The simplicity of the app makes it easy for them to get funds when they need them the most, with only a minimal fee involved. I appreciate the automation of it from notifying new hires about their options to the seamless payroll process that handles deductions. The employer portal is userfriendly and the marketing materials provided make it easy to promote. My customer relations manager is outstanding. He's always quick to respond, solves any issues within 24 to 48 hours and assists me whenever I need help.

Cons

There is no customer service contact number. Employees would rather have a phone line to reach customer support instead of just chat as they don't want to wait for responses when issues come up with their Tapcheck account.
