SurePayroll is a payroll and tax filing platform built for small businesses and household employers. Small teams across healthcare and real estate businesses without dedicated payroll staff use it most. Users frequently highlight its ease of use, while some reviewers report inconsistent experiences with support responsiveness.

Our Verdict

SurePayroll fits small businesses and household employers who want simple payroll processing. The pricing is fair for the segment it targets, though tax filing, year-end forms, and multi-state support carry separate fees worth budgeting for. We recommend it for predictable, simple payroll over a full HR platform.

What Is SurePayroll?

SurePayroll is a Human Resources (HR) and payroll platform that helps manage employee payments and automate tax calculations. It handles direct deposit, W-2 and 1099 preparation, and quarterly tax filings like Form 941, so users don't rely on tracking rate changes manually each year. A dedicated household plan covers Schedule H filings for families paying nannies or caregivers. Employees can log in on their own to view pay stubs and update personal details without going through an administrator.

What Is SurePayroll Best For?

The ‘401(k) Retirement Plan’ is one of SurePayroll's standout offerings. It brings retirement plan setup, payroll deductions, and contribution management into the same workflow instead of requiring separate providers. Employers can also compare different retirement plan options and may qualify for tax credits under the SECURE Act 2.0. For small businesses offering retirement benefits for the first time, this makes the process easier to manage.

How Much Does SurePayroll Cost?

SurePayroll pricing starts at $20/month + $4/employee for the No Tax Filing plan. This plan comes with several features including customer services, payroll taxed filed, supports W-2 employees, reports, and paystubs. Businesses can also choose a Full-Service Payroll plan, while separate pricing is available for household employers.

  • Full-Service Payroll: Starts at $29/month + $7employee
  • Nanny And Household Payroll: Starts at $45.99/month

Besides the actual subscription fee, users may also need to consider the following additional cost:

  • Additional State Payroll: $9.99/month
  • W-2 & 1099 Processing: $50 annual base fee + $5 per W-2 or 1099-NEC form
  • Accounting Software Integration: $4.99/month
  • Time Tracking Integration: may starts at $5/month + $3/employee
  • HR Compliance: likely to start at $30/month

Users generally find SurePayroll budget friendly. It particularly suits businesses that run payroll multiple times. However, smaller teams with specific payroll needs may find it pricier.

SurePayroll Use Cases

Based on SurePayroll's features and user reviews, these are the scenarios where the platform tends to be the strongest fit:

  1. Households Employing Nannies And Caregivers

For families employing household workers, payroll often involves tax obligations that differ from traditional business payroll. SurePayroll's dedicated nanny payroll service combines wage calculations, payroll taxes, and required filings into a single workflow. Reviewers who use the platform for nanny payroll describe it as an easier alternative to managing household tax paperwork and payroll manually.

  1. Employers Switching From Manual Payroll Tax Filing

Businesses that still calculate payroll taxes manually can find SurePayroll a practical next step. By handling payroll calculations alongside tax withholdings and filings, the platform removes several repetitive administrative tasks that often become more difficult as employee counts increase.

  1. New Employers Establishing Payroll Operations

New employers often need guidance when introducing payroll for the first time. SurePayroll's guided setup and straightforward payroll workflow help businesses become operational without requiring extensive payroll experience, making it easier to establish consistent payroll processes from the outset. User reviews highlight that the smooth and easy-to-follow initial setup, making the platform approachable for first-time payroll users.

  1. Organizations With Fixed Payroll Cycles

SurePayroll is a good fit for organizations with fixed salary structures that process the same payroll each pay period. Its 'Auto Payroll' functionality automates recurring payroll runs, reducing the need to initiate identical payrolls manually. Reviews highlight this capability as a major time-saver, noting that routine payroll takes just two to three minutes once employee information is set up.

Is SurePayroll Right For You?

SurePayroll is a suitable choice for small businesses and household employers looking for a payroll platform that can grow alongside their workforce without the complexity of enterprise HCM systems. As part of Paychex, the platform uses 128-bit SSL encryption and stores sensitive information, including Social Security numbers and bank account details, in an encrypted form to help protect payroll data.

One industry update worth nothing is that starting with 2026 payments, the IRS increased the reporting threshold for Forms 1099-NEC and certain 1099-MISC payments from $600 to $2,000. Employers filing 10 or more combined information returns must continue to file electronically. SurePayroll's Full-Service Payroll includes year-end W-2 and 1099 filing services. This way, it helps businesses stay aligned with these reporting requirements without manually tracking regulatory changes.

Payroll made effortless

Pros

When using this platform three words come to mind right away: ease of use! Whether I'm paying salaried employees or hourly staff it fits what I need without any trouble. It also takes care of filing 941s and other payroll related taxes and getting tax documents out to employees each January is very simple. Other than that the reminder emails are genuinely useful. I get notified when a holiday is coming up so I can run payroll ahead of time and I also receive alerts for employee birthdays and work anniversaries.

Cons

After years of managing payroll the part I enjoy the least is still adding a new state to payroll. That process tends to be frustrating no matter which software you use but it still feels like this one could make it more smooth than it is now. Also (although I haven't tested this recently) there used to be an issue when trying to pay a 1099 contractor by direct deposit if they used a Tax ID number instead of an SS#.
